one sec app and internet addiction (or compulsion)

I think most of us are zombies to our email, social media or text.

But if you're reading this, you likely were born before 2000, and grew-up in an analog world.

I certainly did and, as a result, have a lot of shame when I use my device as a pacifier.

Three apps that help a lot

  • one-sec app - requires a deep breath before opening email, Instagram, etc.
  • Freedom.to - blocks certain apps or sites from being opened
  • Screen Time - on iPhone, measures your usage and sets a limit, which you can click through

Today, I'll focus on one-sec.

First, a quick take on internet addiction.  I recently read half of Overcoming Internet Addiction for Dummies, written by one of the pioneers in the field.

I thought those books were actually written by Dummies, who else?

I digress...

Excerpt from one of the chapters, by David Greenfield, a pioneer in the internet addiction space.

So, a lot of us have compulsive behavior around the variable reward mechanism when your email is refreshing or your social media notifications are about to pop up.

One Sec (no affiliation, but click my link and they might be inclined to pay me some day), introduces a 10 second pause for a breath...

...and then asks, "Do you still want to put your pacifier in?"

That is how I see it, and it is really working for me.  I already used Screen TIme to get my use of IG down from 1 hour to 45 minutes, then 45 minutes to 30 minutes.

OneSec took it from 30 minutes to 15 minutes.  That's more than an hour a week I have back!

P.S.  These are some of the practical behaviors I work with clients on.  I would love to support you, or your business & patients.

Individuals, please see my
ALH System page.  Doctors & clinicians, please see my For Providers page to learn more, or book a 15m call here.

Until then, keep it up and keep stacking 1% improvements in your life!

As Ben Franklin says, compounding is the strongest force known in nature!
