1. What's your practice focus and what kind of clients knock on your door ?

My typical client is black female, 21 to 65. Dealing with issues of depression, anxiety and other comorbid diagnoses.

2. Tell us about yourself.

I saw there was a need for African American psychotherapists in my community . This need prompted me to go back to school, put in many years of schooling, get supervision, and post graduate training and get licensed to become a Psychotherapist. The clients I meet say they had such a hard time finding a Black therapist. This is motivates me to come to work every day and do what I do because I know there is such a need.

3. Tell us the story of a patient who you are most proud of helping.

There is one client in particular that I am extremely proud of helping. She was one of my first clients. She had recently escaped from an abusive relationship and was still harassed by her ex-partner. Through our work together, she realized that her past trauma did not define her, instead she realized she was a survivor who had overcome tremendous hardships. She was able to let go of the victim mentality and embrace her true self. It was truly inspiring to witness her transformation.

4. What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a practitioner in private practice?

The hardest thing about being in private practice is the isolation. You don’t have coworkers you don’t have a boss, and all that may seem attractive. There is no one to run things by take up some of the daily tasks. And no one to tell you besides your clients that you’re doing a good job or you doing or not so good job.

5. What are the top 3 tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a private practice today?\

The top three tips I would give anyone looking to start, run, and grow their private practice is to:

  1. Be in it for the long-haul
  2. Don’t expect immediate gratification
  3. Be willing to constantly self assess so that you can see when and where you need improvement .

6. Where can people find you?
